Obituary of John E. Eckelberry

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Eckelberry, John Evans of Syosset, NY died of complications from esophageal cancer on October 27th. John was born on December 11, 1933 in East Cleveland, Ohio. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 56 years Mollie (Stark)Eckelberry and his children Sybil Hajek , Emily Johnson ( Douglas), stepson Alan Houghton (Anne)and two grandsons Stark Johnson and Riggs Johnson. John graduated from Montclair High School , Yale University, and the Artillery & Guided Missile School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a 1193 Field Artillery Unit Commander and completed his voluntary commitment of active duty. He was graduated from Yale University in 1955 and began his Wall Street career at Clark Dodge in the Syndicate Department before moving on to Kidder Peabody, Paine Webber, Solomon Brothers, Albert Frank Financial Advertising, and retired as Chairman of Doremus & Company. His many year commitment to the Wall Street community began when there had been little change in Wall Street over many years. It was a community and his friends stretched over a number of firms or entities. He was known for his wide sense of humor and integrity. The Community changed as changes were forced on the members. The lightness disappeared and in its place became a very competitive business with changes effected on all participants. John's participation stretched over a period that began in 1958 and extended into the beginning of the 21st century. He will be remembered for his integrity and commitment to professionalism. There were many societies and clubs associated with the Wall Street Community and he was an active member of them. John was a member of the Meadow Brook Club, and served on the Board of Stewards from 1985 to 2007. He was also a member of The Brook and Piping Rock Club. With his passing there are few remaining that transited the Wall Street Community over the changes that brought it to where it is today. His humor was vivid to the end. A service celebrating the life of John will be held at St John's of Lattingtown, Locust Valley, NY on Saturday November 12 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be directed to Guiding Eyes for the Blind www.guidingeyes.org Funeral arrangements by Oyster Bay Funeral Home.
