Obituary of John Winship Mason

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mason, John Winship - of Bayville, NY , on February 25, 2017, in his 88th year. Beloved son of the late Elsie and Norman Mason. Devoted brother to the late Ronald, Thomas, David, and Alan. Loving husband to Caryl (nee Stephenson) for 62 years. Beloved father of Caryl Ann Ward (Thomas), Peggy Sutherland (Peter), and Evelyn Mason (Larry Guerra). Amused granddad to Cathleen, Heather, Emily, Kathryn, Christina, Pamela, and Matthew John, and fond great-granddad to Oliver and Nicholas. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. John proudly served his country overseas during the Korean Conflict, then returned home to serve his community as a officer and a detective in the Nassau County Police Department before transferring over to join the brand-new Information Systems (Computer) Department for Nassau County in the 1960s, where he worked until his retirement. John was a brilliant man, an avid reader, and Jeopardy fan who loved learning, especially about new technology, and was extremely concerned about the safety of his loved ones. As he would say, "Never look in laser beams!" Visiting Oyster Bay Funeral Home, 261 South St., Oyster Bay, NY Tuesday 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 1, at 10 a.m. Internment Locust Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the American Civil Liberties Union or to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, two causes John felt very passionate about. www.oysterbayfuneralhome.com.
