Obituary of Walter Lewis Stackler

Please share a memory of Walter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Walter Lewis Stackler (88) of Centre Island, NY and Hobe Sound, Florida, died at home in Oyster Bay on February 10, 2025, having exhausted all possible treatments for cancer.

Walter was born on January 23,1937 to Walter G. and Ida Stackler. Raised in Roslyn Harbor, NY, he was president of his 1954 class at Roslyn High School and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves before embarking on a career in real estate development and investment, building home developments on the South and North Shores of Long Island. In the late 1970s, he acquired a distressed hotel development at 1800 Northern Boulevard in Roslyn, and converted it to an office building which he owned and operated for nearly thirty years.

Walter married the love of his life, Lucy M. Cardon of Garden City, in 1964. They settled in Cold Spring Harbor where they raised their son Walter A. In 1987, he and Lucy moved to Centre Island, Oyster Bay, where he lived through his final days.

Walter's greatest source of pride and his true legacy is his beloved family. He was a devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by Lucy his cherished wife of 60 years, son Walter A. (Lesley), and three grandchildren, Walter E., William, and Katherine. Walter spent a tremendous amount of quality time with his grandchildren, of whom he was very proud. He is also survived by six nieces, Lisa, Cyndy, Bobbi, Christina, Beth, and Joy. He is preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Robert W. Stackler (Téa).

Walter kept life-long friendships since his grade school days. His quick wit and keen sense of humor endeared him to many, and he was a loyal friend for life. He forged many friendships on the golf course at The Creek (Locust Valley, NY) and at Loblolly (Hobe Sound, FL) as well as and on the water, aboard his beloved sailboat, Warrior. Walter was a proud member of the New York Yacht Club and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. A man of infinite interests, Walter channeled his engineer's mind and photographic memory in his passion for vintage cars. Walter and Lucy spent many happy weekends participating in car shows along the East Coast, collecting blue ribbons and friendships along the way.
