Obituary of Halsey G. Tuthill
Halsey was born on May 15, 1944, in Greenport NY, Halsey was the seventh of nine children of Leroy Winfield and Elizabeth Halsey Tuthill. He was a graduate of Greenport High School and later graduated from the University of Tampa.
In 1972, Halsey married Elaine Marie Schaller at her parents’ home in Armonk, NY. Halsey joined Peacock Memorials in Valhalla, NY – his father in laws family business. This is where he discovered and honed a talent for designing commemorative art and monuments. His creative vision and dedication guided him through a fulfilling 50-year career. In 1976 they moved to Carmel, NY and had two daughters, Carrie (1977) and Kelly (1979).
He is survived by his daughters, Carrie Cioffi (Ciaran) and Kelly Saunders (Shane); and four grandchildren: Fiona Elaine Cioffi, Ciaran James Cioffi, Delainey Anne Saunders, and Burke Halsey Saunders. He also leaves behind four siblings: Florence Horton (passed away April 2025), Lucille Koutnik (John), Betty Jane Gatti, and David Tuthill (Jane), along with many nieces and nephews.
Halsey was predeceased by his beloved wife Elaine, his parents: Leroy and Elizabeth, and four siblings: Leroy Donald Tuthill, Joan Tuthill Miller, Carol Ann Taplin, and Reginald Frederick Tuthill.
Halsey lived life with boundless enthusiasm and joy. His favorite past time was cooking up his legendary seafood pasta or working the grill for his "dirty dogs" for the annual Fourth of July party. He brought warmth and heart to everything he encountered. He found serenity and excitement near the water, from boating, to clamming, fishing, or simply relaxing on the beach. He had an enduring love of horse racing. Halsey lived a life filled with zest and leaves a legacy of kindness, creativity, and unwavering love for his family. His twinkling blue eyes, generous heart, and joyful spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of Halsey’s life will be held on Sunday, July 6, at 1:00 PM at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Greenport, NY, with interment of ashes on Monday, July 7th at First Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
