Audrey Katherine Roberts. A sweet and beautiful woman, friend, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Audrey passed away peacefully at the age of 97. She could never quite believe she was 97 because she retained the energy level and passion of a much younger person.

Born at home in Lakeview, Long Island, to Evelyn and John Ward, she was an only child but was lucky to live next to both her maternal and paternal grandparents. She was surrounded by uncles and aunts and many cousins and friends. She spoke of how idyllic her childhood was, filled with family games, roller skating, and dancing. Her avid love for animals started in her youth when her father brought home an orphaned, baby squirrel who she humorously named “Chippy.” Audrey cared for Chippy around the clock, and when the squirrel was released back into the wild, Audrey was sad but relieved that Chippy went back to her natural family. She also had a beloved Boston terrier and a chicken that would both ride in a bicycle basket. The day before Audrey passed away, her fluffy orange cat, Sunshine was with her purring away on Audrey’s bed.

Audrey married William Roberts and had four children together. They lived on Long Island and briefly in St. Louis, MO. Thanks to her husband, Audrey spent every summer on a farm in upstate New York and loved being in the country. She was an open minded and spirited woman, who detested bigotry and inequality. She made and kept many friends.

Audrey remained physically and socially active by attending dances her entire life. She was always up for any adventure at any time. She would be ready at her door, impeccably made up and dressed. She was the person chatting with everyone, the last one on the dance floor and the last one to bed. Every New Year’s Eve, she watched the Times Square ball drop with a glass of champagne in her hand, staying up sometimes until 3 a.m. to see the West Coast usher in the New Year.

Audrey’s love for her family was fierce, tender, and constant. You could count on her strength and fortitude during very trying times. When her eldest daughter, Kim, was murdered decades ago, Audrey was able to carry on for the rest of us, keeping our family ship afloat with her deep well of strength and emotional support.

Mom: You were the matriarch of our family, the Queen. You will be so missed it’s almost incomprehensible to believe you are gone but we know that your legacy lives on in all of us, and we will honor you forever and a day.

We love you.
