Uncle Bob was unique. No one had a better memory for history or genealogy. During our frequent breakfasts, which Laurie and I will always cherish, we were constantly amazed that he could remember something that happened decades ago just as easily as he could tell you what the New York mayor did last week. He was sharp as a tack right up until the end. There are so many things I will remember: laughing as he got goosed by Santa (every year), smiling as he judged the Christmas Cookie Competition (and inevitably crushing Ellie’s dreams), and worrying about whether he would approve of the oatmeal Laurie made during our breakfasts (would it be too watery? Too sticky? Would Uncle Bob push it aside?). But one of my favorite memories goes all the way back to Old Brookville. One afternoon, I ran over to Aunt Mary and Uncle Bob’s house looking for a safe haven. I knocked on the door. I rang the bell. Finally, Aunt Mary answered in her Miss Elaine negligee, with Uncle Bob standing next to her in his striped boxers. Upon reflection, I’m fairly certain I had interrupted some sort of afternoon delight. Without missing a beat, Uncle Bob looked at me and said, “NEEN…come on in.” He called me Neen up until the end. I loved that. Say hi to Aunt Mary and Mom for us, Uncle Bob. Love you!

Over the last several years, Uncle Bob, Janine and I got very close. We had so much fun at our biweekly breakfasts with him, Ana and my dad. Laughing at the news, listening to Uncle Bob regale us with his thoughts on politics, his updates on his day trading and his adoration of Trump. His knowledge of history and his memory of family heritage were beyond impressive. Each visit was filled with laughter and joy. The only stress each morning was if the texture of the oatmeal I prepared for him would be to his liking. We love you Uncle Bob. With your passing we lose the end of a very special era. You will be missed!
