Obituary of David Allen Carl

Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
David Allen Carl was born June 10, 1951 at Glen Cove Community Hospital. David was sent home to glory on sunrise May28, 2013. David was the youngest son of the late Percy Sr. and Geneva Lancaster Carl. He was raised in a household with 6 older siblings who showed him much love and attention. David was a direct descendant of one of the oldest African American and Native American families in Oyster Bay, Long Island, and was named after his Great Grandfather, David Carll who proudly served with the 26th USCT Regiment in the Civil War from 1864-65. David's family roots are strongly embedded in the Oyster Bay community as far back as the mid 1700's to the present as mentioned in the televised show on NBC "Who Do You Think You Are" featuring his celebrity cousin, Vanessa Williams in February 2011. David was raised with his family and lived most of his life on CARL'S HILL which was property that his Great Grandfather purchased prior to serving in the Civil War which has remained in the family's possession for approximately 150 years. While attending Oyster Bay East Norwich School District, David had two best friends (deceased) Thomas Robinson and Elliot Garrison who remained there from childhood till the end. David excelled in sports and was able to bring home Most Valuable Player, All Conference and County for Basketball and also won numerous awards for Track and Field, and Cross Country. He also played Basketball for SUNY Old Westbury in 1974 and received MVP upon graduating with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Sociology with a Minor in Psychology in 1975. David was a true athlete and showed his Godly talent with much class and distinction. In 2005, David and his eldest brother Frank were both inducted into the Oyster Bay Athletic Hall of Fame for their outstanding performances in Basketball. Unfortunately in 1998, David was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis which forced him to retire from the Nassau County Probation Department/Juvenile Detention. During his long hard struggle throughout the years, David continued to maintain his strength and pride and sought for the comfort and support which he desperately needed within his family and close friends. His brother Percy made sure he was able to see his family by bringing him home daily from The Glen Cove Rehabilitative Center. David leaves behind to mourn his wife Brenda Hicks Carl, daughter Ashly , sons Paul Aponte', Brendan, David, and son in law Donovan. Grandchildren: Kaliegh and Donovan Jones. Siblings: Frank(Agnes)deceased, Imogene, deceased., Percy, Fenton(Margaret), Barbara(Otha)deceased., Marchia(Ralph)deceased. Sister in law Valencia Smith, and brothers in law, Thomas Smith, Alton Hicks and many nieces, nephews and cousins. David will always be remembered for his stylish eccentric clothes, jewelry and most importantly his love for music, especially Jimi Hendrix, family and children. In addition, this year, his son David also played Basketball for Oyster Bay High School as a Senior and earned the title MVP as his father had in his Senior year, of 1970, making his father very proud. The family would like to take time to thank all who made the necessary accommodations throughout his latter part of his illness. Your support and kind words are comforting during out hour of need. The Funeral Service will be at the Mount Olive Baptist Church, South Street, and Oyster Bay. Cards and donations would be deeply appreciated and could be sent to The Carl Family, PO Box164 East Norwich NY 11732.
