I am very deeply saddened to learn of Jack Gallagher's passing. Having been employed by North Shore University Hospital early in my career in the 1990's, I had the great privilege and fortune to interact often with Jack on design and construction projects at the hospital and the health system as it grew and evolved under his visionary leadership. Jack's humanity, strength of character, energy, extreme intelligence, sense of humor, passion for accomplishing what needed to be achieved, ability to inspire people to think bigger, genuine interest in those around him, forthrightness, fairness and empathy - these were the genius behind his leadership. His example still serves as a guide for me and others today who were lucky enough to have worked for and with him. Sometimes I'll relate a story about Jack, or one of his sayings, to younger people at my firm, but I can see that they don't quite get it - because they've not experienced a person like Jack. It's a shame, and a great loss.

Dear Grandpa,
I honestly never thought this day would come that I would not be able to pick up a phone and call you. You were one of the biggest influences not only on my life but every other person you touched. You honestly wanted the best for your kids and grandkids and we can not thank you enough for all the effort and support you have given us throughout the years. The mark you left on this world will never be forgotten because it's documented in so many well respected publications. Not many people can say that they were President and CEO of a company and yet still have the respect of his employees to greet them every morning with a smile on your face. Saying goodbye to you will be one of the hardest things I have had to do but I know you and Grandma are in a much better place right now, kicking it with Jesus and Frank Sinatra up in Heaven. I love you Grandpa, say hi to Grandma for me.

As a 25 year employee of the Health System, starting out at NSUH, I have to say, Jack Gallagher is loving remembered. He knew everyone by name, he never once passed you by without saying hello, he always had time for you, he pulled out the best in each of us & he made the hospital a family. He gave you opportunity to think, grow & work hard. He is very much a part of the brick and mortar that the System stands on. He was always very kind to me and I have mentioned his name many times during my years...I often repeat words he once told me "there are people who do and people who don't and unfortunately, the people who do are always making up for the people who don't". I was only about 22 when he told me this.....I get it now. God Bless you Mr. Gallagher, you are an inspiration of how life should be lived.

I was shocked to read of Jack's passing today. Those of us who had the privilege of working with Jack through the North Shore Hospital years can never forget his incredible gifts of compassion, humor, intelligence and creativity. I just can't believe it ..... such a vibrant man. So deeply religious and family oriented, in addition to his boundless energy for improving health care on Long Island. A childhood friend of my father's, our families linked together by our parents deep friendship. Such fun times they had --- in the Jaycees, on the tennis court, the boat, dinners out. Watching Jack play the piano, or play tennis, or just chatting about all the exciting changes in health care. He would want no tears now, but I cannot comply.
