John Doyle posted a condolence

One word comes to mind when I think about Aunt Catherine - dedication. She dedicated living a life to serve others and she did it well. Katie was dedicated to her faith, to her career and most of all to her loving family.
Before I talk about her dedication, I want to share that she was a bit of a worrier. Often times she would worry that she didn’t have something to worry about. I’ve never seen anything like it. When she would stay at Steve and Jen’s, a place she called her eastern palace, she would always be worried about losing her purse. It was Shane and Brandon’s job to know where Aunt Catherine’s purse was at all times! I think they did a good job, because every time she returned home to our house she would have her purse!
Dedication to her faith. She said the rosary everyday and a set of Rosary Beads my son Michael bought for her from St. Patrick’s Cathedral meant the world to her. They were her “go to” set and they only stayed in the house. She had another set that would travel with her. I can pretty much guarantee that if you had a relationship with Aunt Catherine or any of her family and friends you were most certainly in her prayers at some point in her life.
A graduate of St. Dominic High School in 1946, she had a deep love for St. Dominic. Even when she fell ill she would always make sure her weekly envelope was sent by mail and it would have a special note on it asking that the envelope be placed on the altar at a Mass that weekend. Yes Father - she’s the one…
She told me that when she was a child growing up in Oyster Bay, her mother Jennie would make sauce every Sunday. Katie would often take a pot of sauce and walk it up to the convent on St. Dominic campus and deliver it to the nuns. I think that was probably a good curve on her GPA and helped get her through her high school years.
Many of you may not know that she worked for a law firm for over 50 years. One job for 50 years! Most every day she walked from her home on Shore Avenue in Oyster Bay to her office up on South Street. Can you imagine? She was very fond of her co-workers and bosses and that feeling was obviously mutual based on the recent visits we had with many of you.
She was also very dedicated to her beloved NY Mets, this I could never figure out as she told me stories of chasing Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto and Mickey Mantle thru the streets on Manhattan in her post high school years. She always had a soft spot in her heart for the under dog and that likely led her to the Mets in the early 60’s. It’s amazing she survived all those nights yelling at Bobby Valentine and Terry Collins thru the TV in recent years. It certainly looked like it took a toll on her! I am grateful that Carolyn, my son Michael and I got to share one last trip to Citifield this year with her.
Atlantic City will never be the same, she really looked forward to her trips to AC and as she put it, “make her contribution”. When we vacationed in the Jersey Shore we had to set aside time for Aunt Catherine to get to the casinos.
No doubt the most important piece of her life was her family. She grew up among the Minicozzi cousins which is a large group and also held the LoMonaco cousins close to her heart as well. I watched in amazement as she would watch over her cousins Tootsie and Gracie on Maxwell Avenue in their later years, often putting their needs ahead of her own.
There are a long list of Minicozzi cousin gatherings, Sunday family gatherings for macaroni, sauce and meatballs, family picnics at Roosevelt Park or Eddie Minicozzi’s house and most recently cousin luncheon’s at La Pizzetta in East Norwich. She was honored to have all of her cousins in her life and really enjoyed those gatherings. I have to imagine there is a setting up in heaven that resembles the layout of Maxwell and Shore Avenues and the first card game or bocce game has already taken place.
Though Aunt Catherine never married she had nieces and nephews she treated as daughters and sons. I look back at how proud she was of each and every one of you as the milestones piled up. She loved you all as if you were her own child and you actually were. In her loving and generous way she has shown each of us how much she loved us time and time again.
Her siblings were always at the top of her thoughts. I enjoyed the time she lived with us how we rehashed how much she enjoyed growing up. She and Lucille were inseparable able for as long as I have known them. Katie was by Lucille’s side as we all dealt with Ronnie’s illness back in 2003. She made every trip to the hospital to be by her sisters side to provide comfort. Later when Lucille got sick, Aunt Catherine was by her side through every treatment, doctor appointment and whatever else was needed. Often times she would put her own health and ailments aside to be with Lucille when she needed her most. She constantly worried about Uncle Tony and Aunt Ann. As recent as a few days before her passing she asked that I find out how her Anthony was doing and how Ann was doing. She was not well herself and all she could think about was the well being of others.
One thing that she struggled with as time went on was her reliance on everyone else. She was a person that wanted to always be there for others, when it was time for us to come together to help her, she had difficulty with that. Even though she felt she was putting others out, she was always so appreciative. I would tell her often that she spent a lifetime serving all those she loved, it was time for us to show her some love in return.
Kathy and Sue - she loved you both so much. Her journeys to Mercy League, AC and Ocean City were among her favorite things to do! She would say often she doesn’t know what she would do without you!
I could go on for days about what she was most grateful for when it comes to Carolyn, Mike, Diana, Jen, Steve, Joe and Lisa. She would jump when the phone rang just to hear your voices, but she cherished the in person times we all had together. Whether an impromptu family gathering/card game or a family vacation, I know these are the memories she cherished most! She loved you all so much and was such a great living example to not only us, but also to our kids, of the importance of family! It is important that part of her legacy gets passed on to our kids.
Speaking of our kids. Since selling the family home in Oyster Bay, Aunt Catherine lived 10 months with Mike and Diana and the last 6 months with Carolyn and I. Having her in our homes I have seen Brian, Sean, Michael and Matthew grow into fine young men and step up when it came to pitching in to help with Aunt Catherine. She loved it when you boys were home with her and loved living with you. I am proud of the four of you and appreciate all you have done to make her feel special.
Donnie and Laurie-Ann. She always enjoyed getting together with you. She was so proud of the families you started and especially proud of your children as they continue to grow. I know when Thomas decided to study law she had the sense that her nephew was continuing in “the business”. She was in many ways our connection to you and all that was happening in your lives. We need to be sure we stay connected in her memory!
I have to make special mention of Carolyn, Katie’s goddaughter. I can’t put it into words, but from the very first time I met the Reidy/LoMonaco family in 1984 I could sense the strong bond between these two. Carolyn I watched you nurse Aunt Catherine and take the lead on her fight. You kept your brothers and cousins informed and together had to make many tough decisions. One day you will reunite with her and she will hug you and let you know how much she appreciated all of your efforts. She told me often that she didn’t know what she would do without you! She loved you dearly and was very proud to be your Aunt.
I came across a phrase recently that made me think of Aunt Catherine - “We only get the best of others when we give the best of ourselves.” It is obvious that Katie gave the best of herself, I am confident that as she watches over us she does so with a full heart knowing that we all gave her the best in return. She will be deeply missed.
