To the family of William Von Novak,
Your mom was my English teacher at Locust Valley High School and remains my favorite teacher in my memories. She encouraged me as a writer, and as a student to become an educator. I have been in education as a teacher, now an administrator, for over 35 years, thanks to her. When she passed, I met your kind father. He was such a gentleman. Living in Oyster Bay, I would see him in passing and it would always bring a smile to my face. It was a joy and pleasure to know both of them. They both touched so many lives.
May they both be together in God's loving arms.

To Bill’s children and grandchildren,
I am so sorry for your loss. I knew your father and grandfather when he was the Bay Shore High School Principal and I was the district’s new Public Information Officer beginning in 1980. He was such a kind, caring gentleman. He always had a smile on his face. As a new, very nervous employee he helped me negotiate the system in the most generous ways. I remember one time I had to attend an event at the high school and couldn’t find a sitter for my 4 month old infant. Your Dad wheeled her around for me and helped me carry her stroller down the many front steps of the building. I never forgot his kindness and his helping me to feel at ease.
Again, I am so sorry for your loss. May your happy memories ease your loss.
In sympathy,
Kathy Tapogna

Bill and Ellen welcomed us warmly into their family about 25 years ago by virtue of the marriage of our children. We were lucky to be able to share with them so many joyous and sad occasions. We were so fortunate. We have been missing Ellen, and now Bill has left to join her. May you rest in eternal peace. Bill, you left amazing contrails and were the role model for grand-parenting. You were such a gracious, humble, honest, talented, special man. You will be sorely missed by family, friends, co-workers, neighbors. You made a difference, rest in peace my friend. Hector and Joan

I worked with Bill at Bay Shore High School for years. Eventually Bill as principal and I as English Department chairman. We were simpatico both personally and professionally. We knew the ultimate absurdity of both our jobs and laughed and it, knowing that neither of us could do the things we knew had to be done. Bill was one of the finest men I ever know. Rest in peace, old friend. Harry Anderson

For 50 years, my best friend was Ellen O’Brien Von Novak. She had it all. I sometimes wondered if she would ever meet someone to match her abundant and wonderful qualities. She did.
