Obituary of Melvinia Virginia James

Please share a memory of Melvinia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Melvinia “Virginia” James, age 98, of Syosset Long Island, NY entered into rest on September 14, 2020. Virginia and her twin brother, Aggressor, were born on March 3, 1922, in Painter, Virginia to Ambrose and Georgianna Baily Sample. She was one of 17 children. After graduating from the North Hampton School System, she moved to Oyster Bay, New York, at the age of 17.

Virginia was a member of the New Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Bacon Hill Virginia until she moved to Oyster Bay. She became a dedicated member of Mount Olive Baptist Church for over 60 years. She was a missionary for the church and was a member of the Oyster Bay Community Club.

Virginia married the late Reverend Carlos Warner James on July 12, 1942 and from this union, had three sons, Carlos, Kevin and Ian. They moved to Westbury, NY in 1963.

“No greater love has a mother”, is a statement that completely defines the essence of Virginia. Her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, marriage and family provided the foundation for her family. The partnership between Virginia and Reverend James made dreams come true and taught their sons the meaning of devotion to God and love of family. Her love for gardening allowed her to have a picturesque front and backyard. She always found time to make her special Lemon pound cake for various church events.

Virginia was a “Diva” before the term became popular. She never left her room
without putting on her lipstick.

Virginia is survived by her three sons, Carlos, (Renee), East Point Georgia, Kevin (Rhonda), Shelby, North Carolina and Ian (Lucille) New York City, affectionately known as “Virginia’s boys”, eight grandchildren, Carlos Jr. Todd, Andre, Kellee, Robyn, Erikka, Carllee, and Skyye, three great grandchildren, Adria, Kellan and Noelle.

Melvinia is blessed to have a host of nephews, nieces, family, friends and devoted church members. A special thanks from Virginia’s sons, to Jeanette James and Martha and JK Green for their unselfish support and dedication over the years to Mom.
