Obituary of Gladys E. Mitchell

Mitchell, Gladys E.– on Feb. 19, 2021, age 81, of Oyster Bay, NY. Beloved wife of the late Graham. Loving mother to James (Anastasia), Ronald (Marie), and Glenn (Colleen). Loving grandmother to Rose, Connor, Sean, Colin, Christina, and Maddie. Great grandmother to Casey Lou. She was a dear sister to Norman, Victor and Ann of Mountcharles, Co. Donegal. Gladys left Ireland as a teenager in the late 1950's for a new life in America. She was graciously hosted by her Aunt Sadie Koebele, husband Carl, and children Robert (Deborah) and Nancy (Ronald). She met and married Graham, also an Irish immigrant shortly after. They settled in a quaint house in Hicksville and raised a family of 3 boys there. They were wonderful years, with the house often filled with family and friends. After Graham's passing in 1985, Gladys displayed the subtle strength and courage that were her hallmarks; she studied nights and weekends to earn her High School diploma - one of her proudest accomplishments. She didn't stop there, and continued her studies, first becoming a Nurse's aide, and later an LPN. Her time as a visiting Nurse being the most rewarding, though she spent as much time chatting with patients as she did treating them. Along the way Gladys managed to travel extensively. Among her favorites were annual trips to Mexico with friends, extended trips to Ireland to visit family, and weekends on Shelter Island - a place she first discovered soon after arriving from Ireland. She will be missed by all.
