Obituary of George P. Pillari, MD
Pillari, M.D., George Peter – on Oct. 31, 2021, age 81, of Jupiter, FL, formerly of Lattingtown, NY. Beloved husband of Carol. Loving father of George (Rosanna), Michael (Abby) and Karen Penner (Harry). Cherished grandfather of Marie Sarah, EmilyAnne, Andrew (Adrienne and son Drew), Matthew Joseph, Michael, Mollie, Madeline, Lily, Peter, Matthew Pillari, and Matilda, Harry, Kent, Max, Charlie, and Stuart Penner. Dear brother of Vincent T. Pillari,MD (Betty) and Kathleen Merklein (the late Jack). Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He passed on his love of classical music, history, philosophy, and of course, fishing. George served his country for three years during the Vietnam War as a physician in the U.S. Public Health Service and broke ground as one of the first interventional radiologists in the profession, was the first to publish research on the predictors of rupture in abdominal aortic aneurysm, and holds a U.S. Patent for the invention of the Pillari Needle. He worked 30+ years at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York (now Northwell Health) and later did part-time work for the Veterans Administration. Early in his career, George volunteered as a physician for the Golden Gloves boxing program and also ran clinics and treated those suffering from substance abuse. He authored or co- authored more than 60 academic papers, trained dozens of interns and residents, and was an Associate Professor of Medicine, Albert Einstein Medical College.
