I was honoured to read my eulogy at Dad’s memorial yesterday. I have been asked to post the poem I read out at the end. It is called “How did they live” by an anonymous poet. Here it is:
“Not, how did he die, but how did he live?
Not, what did he gain, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with words of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did the words in the newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away?
This was a man, a father a friend
A man who loved life and is loved without end”

Jeremy will be, and already is, terribly missed. His infectious smile and very English sense of humor made him a delight to be around. He was never shy of speaking his mind and breaking a rule if he thought it was silly. The Creek was a community that welcomed Jeremy and Lindsay as family. As a family we all will feel this loss as a personal one. We hope Lindsay will know she is loved and supported and will call on this network of friends, especially at this difficult time.
With love and prayers of peace and comfort at this particularly sad time.

I have to say Jeremy, I was gutted when Natalie told me in our French class at Portsmouth High School that she was moving with you all to the US!!! Noooo we were finally at the same school together, playing lacrosse, tennis, it was great! And remember the early morning drop offs at Links Lane when Dad was on his way to work, great times.
You had a fantastic life opportunity that you seized and I don’t think ever looked back. Mum has said it Natalie and I have continued our friendship, it is the strongest one I have. And you and Natalie had a very special father daughter relationship.
I will keep fond memories of you smiling, laughing, making no nonsense remarks, straight to the point, and always spot on! And your personality has been passed on to Natalie and Paul
I’m really sad your time came this soon. My thoughts to Lindsay and all the family, you will be leaving a big hole, but also many happy memories.
Rest In Peace Jeremy ❤️

From: Gerhard Weich, Germany.
Dear Lindsay,
it was so good talking to you today.
We all here in Europe who heard the news about Jeremy were very sad. Even those, who have not met him for some years meanwhile, did remember him as a person who is on one side professionally very serious, but on the other side with great human understanding and full of humour. He has shown us in many meetings, that even the serious side of the financial world can have many pretty funny sides - with other words, he has made our (working) life more pleasing!
Dear Lindsay, you have asked me to remember some anecdotes from our time we had together. As we were colleagues and good friends for such a long time, there were so many funny stories to remember!
But maybe I pick some of those events, which show some light on his great character:
- one day Jutta and I have enjoyed an invitation to your wonderful house in Oyster Bay. We had drinks in the garden, then moved to the dining room and then, to our surprise, there was not only you and Jeremy together with us, but also somebody else sitting very upright next to Jutta at the table ... this was Freddy, your Labrador! We felt that this was the top grade of hospitality, as we were missing our own Labrador Liza, which we had to leave at home in Germany!
- working for the same great, but very demanding company was not all we needed in our friendship: there were some interesting rounds of golf when he did show me patiently how much better this game could be played, but our very special events were our skiing outings to Switzerland: Davos, Zermatt and Lech. This were unforgettable weeks, when you, Lindsay, did show us how to manage the most difficult ski runs (all of them you mastered as a member of the Scottish National Alpine Team!) , but I was able to show Jeremy (who was permanently grumling!) how to successfully do Langlauf Skiing even if the next alpine hut is not just around the corner!
There is no foto from this historic event, but one from Zermatt - does it show beautifully what a happy team we were? (see scan 18 and 23)
But Jeremy did never forget!! When he gave his speech at my retirement party on the Warrier Ship in Portsmouth, he was pulling my leg in such a hilarious way, that not only the whole party fell over laughing, but also myself could enjoy my own past sins!!
There is a Foto (Scan 19) which shows better than any words who he was dealing with an old friend ... brilliant, witty, combative, but always with love and respect.
This is how we always will remember you, Jeremy!
Dear Lindsay, there is much more to say, but this for the moment.
With all best wishes, and love, also from Jutta Ann-Kathrin and Nicklas,
Gerhard

Only met my great uncle Jeremy a handful of times, but I came to the US and stayed with him for a week in 2019. He was incredibly kind and thoughtful and we had a great week together. He made my stay comfortable and enjoyable and was always thinking of ways to help or fun stuff to show me. We kept in touch after I returned to England and it was always nice to chat to him.

A lovely note from Gilli Williams:
Dear Natalie
I was so saddened to hear that your dear father, Jeremy, had passed away. Sarah had warned me that he was seriously ill but it was still an awful shock to hear the tragic news. So many memories have come flooding back about a dear friend, jolly parties and many happy times back in England when you, Paul, Sarah and Howard were all just kids. I am so pleased the friendship you all enjoyed then has endured to this day, especially that between you and Sarah despite the mileage between you.
It’s always sad when a good friend moves so far away, but Jeremy obviously found great happiness and success in the US as have you. I know you have been a wonderful daughter to him and he will have treasured having you and your lovely children close by, and to have been with him in his last days.
I know he was a great father and you and all his family will miss him terribly. My thoughts are with you all at this very sad time. The happy family life and many fun times you have shared with him will, I hope, comfort you in your grief. He was a lovely man and will be missed by all who knew him.
With much love and big hugs
Gilli xxxxx

I remember when I was little I referred to Grandpa as my ‘Funny Grandpa Jeremy’. He was constantly cracking jokes, making everyone laugh, but he was always the loudest laugh in the room; the person having the most fun. He always saw situations as a glass half full, which is a quality I admired then and I admire still now. I loved every moment spent with him in both NYC and England and I will cherish those memories for the rest of my life. I will love Grandpa always and I miss him very much x

Most sincere condolences to the entire family on the most unfortunate news of Jeremy's passing. I shall always be thankful to have had the opportunity to have worked with Jeremy for so many years, but more importantly the friendship that developed and endured through the years.
I have fond memories of my first trip to Pall's HQ at Europa House in Portsmouth when Jeremy and Lindsay were gracious enough to have me over for a BBQ dinner after first stopping at the local pool to watch one of the kids compete in a swimming race. Jeremy possessed that keen common sense intelligence, complemented by a sharp wit with excellent comedic timing where even delivering a straight faced comment could result in spontaneous chuckles from his audience.
Jeremy always valued his friends and remained loyal to this end as was best evidenced during his well attended retirement dinner from Pall that was conducted at Oheka Castle when he was kind enough to mention the long term friendships with colleagues Steve Greco, Don Bordoni, and myself amongst the many individuals he thanked.
We continued to keep in touch via Facebook through the years, and one of the things I shall greatly miss are the exchange of travel logs and related information given that we have both enjoyed exploring the world. Jeremy, may you rest in peace as your travels have now embarked on a new journey. Gone from this earthly place perhaps, but certainly not forgotten.
Bobby

Jeremy was a wonderful brother, I couldn't of wished for better! He was always a very active man who loved his sports,he used to play Rugby for Havant and suffered quite a few injuries. He also had a beach hut on Hayling island where we spent many hot summers, they always seemed hot in those days. Last time I saw Jeremy was in Barbados at my daughter's wedding I shall miss him greatly.

Dad wasn't one for goodbyes, or wearing emotions on his sleeve, so I like to think this picture was a goodbye of sorts while he is saying hello and singing Silent Night for a surprise family Christmas Eve drop in for caroling, Lindsay and I orchestrated. Dad was quick witted, fast acting, organized and worked hard at living his best life.
He was, indeed, a generous man. He believed in family, even the blended one we were. He believed in us as a unit so much that his idea of a most fun 70th birthday was a trip to Maui - AMAZING!! Thank you, Dad!! He took us all as well to his country clubs and was so generous that my children, Jeremy, Jessica, and Matthew, thought that Grandpa was using our code when ordering at the snack bar!
Dad was so very well cared for in his final months. Thank you, Lindsay - you were amazing... Dad was as grateful of us as we were of him surrounded by such love and support.
Dad is "not on his last legs", as he said. No! We walk on! As he also said, "swans are back!"
Rest easy, Dad. I love you xxx

In tribute to my Uncle Jeremy Hayward Surry, I made a soundfile featuring the below words and probably his favourite piece of popular music:
I looked up from my Eulogy and, although his hands were locked together in prayer, I saw him looking intently at me.
And, over dinner that night in a fine Italian restaurant that he paid for, he told us tales of our Father that only someone intimately connected to the family would know.
For family was important to him. He had worked at being around! He made it his business.
If my Father, or any of my other dysfunctional family members on both sides, had anything to do with it, it wouldn’t have been that way.
No: he made it happen, for he felt that that’s what family does – be together.
There were so many instances.
I used to baby-sit for his children – Natalie and Paul - and he always made sure the fridge was full and that he paid me well.
I recall going to his house and enjoyed swimming in his pool
I recall that, out of the blue, he sent me money that I spent on a motorbike. It was generous of him, and I feel guilty to this day that I’d done such a thing.
And, as kids, he would take us to his country club in his Ford Ghia. It was an adventure for us, may I tell you.
On the radio, he always used to play this song
He belonged to a time of decency and generosity. He will be missed!

Your mention of the Ford Ghia reminded me of one of his lesser known skills: his ability to tap the ash off his cigarette and completely out of the car by leaving the window open a crack and tapping the cigarette against the crack. I did not like the smoking but the ash tapping was something to admire!

Dad lived a wonderful life and achieved many things. He was a hard working man who helped me and the rest of the family as much as he could at the time, no matter what. He was the best Dad.
He was proud to hold the Union Jack at this golf event at The Creek. I am very proud he was my father. I will miss him so much!
