My heart is broken on hearing of the passing of my dear Kenyon College friend and fraternity brother, Russ Selover. I remember our times together with great joy--- sharing a love of rock and roll, exchanging lengthy letters during summer breaks, his 21st birthday party at Mazza's in Mount Vernon, Ohio with his mom and dad and our frat brothers, and my visits to Garden City after college. I rejoiced when he met Mary (who I instantly liked and loved). Rest in peace, my dear friend Russ. Joe Tegreene

Russell was my very first bf at Kenyon College back right from the beginning of freshman year. I was shocked to hear the news in the Kenyon Magazine today.
He was fun and funny, very caring and a wonderful only son to his dear parents, Victor and Donna, of Garden City. We spent several years of a wonderful relationship and my memories of the Dekes and his many pals remains forever embedded. I was happy to hear he married a wonderful woman, Mary, and had a beautiful daughter, Victoria. Sending deep condolences for his untimely death and i am so sorry to hear his travails of the last year and a half of his life but not surprised to hear about his courage and positive midnset. with love, Elizabeth Levitt Resnick

Dear Mary & Victoria,
We feel privileged to have spent time with Russell, albeit our gatherings were far too few. A truly kind gentleman, he was the ideal husband, father and father-in-law.
In sympathy,
Allison & Rob

It is because he so warmly shared his good humor, enthusiastically shared his good fortune and sincerely shared his love, my fellow "Brotherhood of The Watch" will, for me, be remembered as an example of how to live a life always paying it forward.
Rest in eternal peace.

I am most grateful for the relationship Russell cultivated with my parents, Ora & Howard Smith. Both he & Mary did so much for them. But the bond between my Dad & Russell was something special. I can hear Russell saying, "And what do you think Dr. Smith?" My Dad loved that, especially when surrounded by a bunch of ladies whose opinions he didn't want to hear. He and Russell were always on the same wave length, which made spending time together so great.

We lost a great neighbor and friend in Russell. My summers kept busy notifying him of weather that might affect his dock and boat- even going over there to put on a larger fender to counteract the wave action we get in Southerly's. And I still don't know who put VIctoria up to shooting balloons at me at various places on my body! And what a small world finding out he also went to Kenyon College in Ohio. We'll really miss him- God bless you, Russell. Larry and Carol

Russell was a great conversationalist who actively listened then asked probing questions. He kept you on your toes. He was incisive and quick-witted. He was a gracious host who flattered his guests with his high standards. He didn’t serve just any sparkling water, he taste-tested a comprehensive variety and declared a winner after careful research. Then he banished the also-rans, never to darken his doorstep again. He would have made a magnificent king. He was kind and considerate. He was a loving husband and father. He lived well, loved well and was well-loved.

By the luck of an alphabetical draw, Russell and I shared a locker together as we tried out for the Kenyon College Freshman Soccer Team in 1971. We became fast friends, fraternity brothers, tennis partners, shooting and fishing bums and watched each other's families grow, Russell was involved in every part of my life since 1971, and has been the most generous and involved Godfather to my son Elliott. We laughed, played cards, boasted, lied about fish we had caught, and shared the occasional tipple and cigar. Russell was always transformational, innovative and the leader of the pack for organizing fishing and shooting trips to exotic locales. He was always my go- to source on all things soccer and tennis. He was my partner in a tennis member-guest, and an older gent ( 75 +) shambled slowly on the court across the net. I whispered to Russell we should be gentle. After a 6-1, 6-1 defeat (a kind opponent did give us a courtesy game) we learned the was the reigning 75 age + world squash champion ! Best match we ever lost !
He lifted my spirits when I was down, got me back onto the right path when I strayed and was always able to get a laugh from his tall tales and stories. I will miss sharing an evening of relaxation with him accompanied by a martini and one of his always astute picks for a fine red wine. Russell is the textbook example of a life well lived, and I will not see his like again. RIP my brother.

Russell was a friend and client for many decades and we loved talking soccer, tennis and the financial markets from time to time. He was a talented tennis player - had real feel with his hands and was forever trying new rackets and strings moving his game forwards. His final piece of advice to me was to change my “antique rackets!” He had a positive outlook for as long as I knew him. He was loving and caring to all around him. I will greatly miss him.
