Rev. Ann (Abbate) Van Cleef posted a condolence
I just learned of Eugene's passing, and am deeply saddened. We are second cousins. Eugene and I would run into one another at family funerals, and part with the promise of "we'll get together sometime." I regret that I never really got to know this truly wonderful man, and take comfort in the promise of life after death. My prayers go out to the family that we share.

Deborah Klugman, Lansco Colors posted a condolence
To the family of Gene Abbate,
I was shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of an old friend, Gene. We worked together for many years in the NCMA/NYS branch . I remember Gene's wonderful sense of humor, his sense of style and how much fun he could make an otherwise dry subject.
I will personally remember him that way and I send my deep condolences in the loss of someone so young and so special.

Jeff & Kathy Johnson and family posted a condolence
Being the cousin from Nebraska, I looked forward to our trips back to NY. I especially enjoyed the time I was able to spend with cousin Eugene. Getting to see him again last summer after over 30 years was very special for me. That is all the more special now that he has joined our Lord in heaven. God bless his family and know that we are keeping them all in our prayers.

Forever the trailblazer, Eugene now leads us on a new beginning where he promised me we'd "be together one day with Jesus." Until then, when we can again be in his midst, we'll continue his legacy of recreating, reinventing, and improving our lives and the world.
In his view of life, he saw the cup not full, but overflowing, and tried valiantly to have everyone share the scope of his vision. To my loving brother, life was a big deal, and he was forever in search of the novel, while making magic of the mundane. From single digits, he wandered, explored, and honed his adventurous spirit. Whether at the shore, in the woods or fields, the world beyond our back door was his opportunity to find the perfect souvenir of this thrilling world. It was never an easy task to keep track of him, but it was impossible to keep up with him. Eugene reserved a deep love for his family and those he wove into the fabric of his family. He enveloped us with his warmth and etched his precious smile, laughter, and hearty "Heloooooooooo!" in the recesses of our consciousness, to be played and re-played when we need a fresh perspective to transform the day-to-day into treasured times. Oh, to hear that hello just one more time.... "For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings/ That then I scorn to change my state with kings" (Shakespeare).
The world will remark that "His life was gentle, and the elements so mix'd in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, 'This was a man!'" (Shakespeare)

I had lost track of Gene in the years since my membership in the NYS Concrete Masonry Sociey when we were there. The sad news came as a shock to me. I will always remember Gene as one of the best people I have ever known in every respect: a kind, caring loving person who made everyone feel that they were his friend. His energy, intelligence, laughter and friendship will remain with me.
With love,

Carl Frappaolo posted a condolence
The value of a life is not measured by its length, but by the number of friends, the lives touched and its impact on humanity. Eugene's life may have been cut short by some measures, but his life was full. I was honored to call him cousin, despite the fact that there was no blood between us. Memories, they mostly date back to childhood, are too many too mention here, but are all characterized by humor and a bit of benignly mischievous fun. He will be missed, especially by his family, but he goes to a better place now, to be in peace, where he will be joined with many who love him, and went before him.
