Sigrid Mirabella posted a condolence
My profound thanks to all who have visited this site and written so eloquently
about my beloved husband. It helps my devastated heart to see how he was loved by others. I wonder how I will go on without him when half of me is gone. When he met me, I was like a bird with damaged wings. He held me until I could fly. Steve loved to give fledglings the courage to try and soar, always making sure to be there to catch them if aspirations took them too high. His encouragement and enthusiastic attitude was my safety net.
Steve would recite poems to me by heart as we sat on our lawn swing facing the mountains, or he might spontaneously compose one for me. He loved a smooth glass of Chianti, some imported salami, parmesan and good Italian bread as he listened to a selection from Teleman, Santana, or perhaps Jimi Hendrix. Our excursions to Italy and getting to see Italian art in person just made him giddy with joy. I would read him novels as we traveled to destinations. Sometimes, he would pick up his guitar and “noodle” on it (his word) while he was watching TV. I can picture him correcting papers with a cat on his lap and dogs at his feet, the Simpsons flickering on the tube. I can’t recall how many times he excitedly shared with me small details he’d uncovered for the book he was working on about Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel. He was passionate about this. Mostly, I remember him sacrificing what he wanted most and living to make others happy--especially me.
My darling, I will love you forever. “I carry your heart…” EE Cummings

It is hard for me to put into words what Steve gave and taught me. I can tell you that he had more love in his heart than anyone could imagine. He showed me what true unconditional love really is by the way he loved my mother. He always stood by my side even when I am sure I made it very hard. He came into my life when things in my life were extremely hard. He always showed me compassion and love. When he knew he wanted to marry my mother he came to me first and asked for my blessing. What an amazing gesture, he loved her that much! Long before becoming a teacher he instilled in me a passion for history, art, and music that has changed me forever. It touched me deeply how much he loved teaching, his students, and his colleagues . I wish I was able to thank him for loving my mom and I as much as he did, for teaching me when I didn't want to be taught , and then when I did. I also wanted to thank him for always being there smiling. He was not just my step-father he was my father and friend. I miss and love him so much! Happy Fathers Day!

What a beautiful artist's heart Stephen had. I remember him from his True Blue days in the late 80's when he had just met Sig. Stephen enjoyed exploring new artistic expression, becoming an accomplished guitarist during the time I knew him. I was always blown away by his sculpting talent. Much love to you Sig, you're in my prayers.

I was a friend of Steve Mirabella's back in high school days in Queens, NY. He and my brother played in several bands. I well remember his vibrant personality and great laugh. We'd all end up at some Greek diner on Long Island - mostly The Omega - after rockin' and rollin' on a Saturday night. He wrote us a lovely note after our mother passed away in 1995. I knew he'd moved to Virginia but we didn't keep in touch. I always thought Steve was a great guy, but was astonished to learn he was a teacher so beloved by students and colleagues and a man so obviously deeply cherished by his wife and daughter. Steve, you made of your life a work of art as beautiful and profound as any you discussed in the classroom.

I first met Stephen as a sleepy, grumpy and uncomfortable 7th grader at JRDS. We later bumped into each other around Amherst. He always exuded a calmness that I will never forget. He put me at ease every time we spoke.
Looking back I can attribute much of my growth to two people, Mary Gough and Stephen Mirabella. He so quietly and effectively did his work that I never realized how deeply he effected my life. This year, I was sitting at my computer, writing my senior thesis and I was suddenly struck by the question, would Mr. Mirabella like this paper? While I never acted on it, I always felt that he would have been there for me if i needed him. I will miss that feeling.

To Steve's family and friends,
for those who might not know, Stephen Mirabella what quite a talented rhythm guitarist. I was in a band with him in the late 80’s early 90’s in NYC. Sigrid, I remember when Stephen met you. When you had your accident he stayed by your side, he was so in love with you, so deeply devoted to you, we marveled at the enormous heart he had. I didn't know he ended up teaching. Those kids were blessed to have such a warm, sensitive, gentle, generous, intelligent, and contagiously enthusiastic man as their teacher. I remember his dedication to the blues band as a great rhythm guitarist, his wonderful artwork, his bronze sculpture, and his and your abiding friendship. I remember how selfless he was to take care of his sister Elise all those years. I remember his honesty and his kindness and caring for all living things. I thank you for telling me about his passing, but I admit I am weeping terribly as I type here as that is often what happens when memories of people who have deeply touched your life pass away. I wished we could have kept in touch. I always told my husband Tim about you and Steve and where you lived and how I wished we could visit. He and I and our 7 year old son Quinn and traveled north from Raleigh, NC these past 7 seven years to visit my family in Vermont but you all were just a little further west to stop. I know we have been exchanging Christmas cards these past few years but had no idea what you were going through. My heart breaks for you Sig. Just breaks for you. I have a funny memory of Stephen when he and the band True Blue came to my folks farm in Vermont to play at my dad's 60th birthday party, he said being out in the country, without all the noise of the city freaked him out. And then look where you all ended up moving to! I marveled at that fact. Once again I am so very sorry for your and your families loss. May you hang onto the the enormous love you shared, the beautiful memories and continue to heal at this difficult time. I still have some of our music on tape if you ever want to hear it!
Much love,
Peggy Hayes

It was Mr.Mirabella who helped sparked my love for my favorite subject, history in the 6th grade. It was also Mr.Mirabella who first instigated my love for Pirates of Caribbean, when he told our class about the "Curse of Cortez", which was featured in the first movi(Because of him I knew more that most other Pirates of the CAribbean fans). Mr. Mirabella was the teacher I always made sure to visit every time I was in the middle school. His passion for art, history, teaching, and life itself inspired me to do the same. I will always think happily of the times I spent with him, whether in the classroom or not. I give my condolences to his family and friends. I am glad to know that he will no longer suffer from the effects cancer.

Steve, the playful lion. A lion because he had enormous writing and artisitic talent, which I thoroughly enjoyed in a too-brief relationship through the Virginia Writer's Club. And playful, because the zest for life he and Sigrid exhibited was infectious and exhilerating. Never to be forgotten or underappreciated. For me, he will live on in the richness of the prose and poetry he left behind--and in the light in Sigrid's eyes.

I admired Steve's natural strength and courage, and how he would "tell it like it is" in every situation, always with grace and style, and usually, with a big grin and a sparkle in his eye. This year, despite all the things Steve was going through, when he was in the classroom with his kids, his sparkle was brighter than ever. Of course, when I mentioned that to Steve, he said it was just the light reflecting off his bald head... then he grinned... and sparkled.

This candle can not express the light that Stephen gave to all he loved. We were blessed to have him for his very short life. He gave all of himself to everyone he touched and he touched many, many people. He was gracious and strong.
Stephen was like a twin brother to me. We shared childhood memories and kept our own candles burning throughout our lives until his untimely end. When we lost Stephen we lost part of ourselves. Not many can compare with his strength, wisdom, knowledge and loving nature. He was the most caring husband to Sigrid and the best brother anyone could ever want to Elyse. He loved his children Tamera and Kirk and all the children who touched his life through family and those he taught. Some thing I loved about being with you:
Staying up to hear the birds chirping in the wee hours of the morning listening to Bob Dylan and other records on the stereo. Relating so well together. Gerry spreading unfounded gossip about us.
Island Park - you loaned me your brand new tricycle that you'd just gotten for your birthday to go to the store and a truck ran it over... I don't think you cried or protested but I felt so bad.
Central Park sitting under the trees, you playing and singing Bob Dylan's 115th Dream...
Johnny's in the basement mixing up the medicine...You taught me all the words.
Our love of Aretha and sitting together singing and listening to her double tape of her greatest hits.
You taught me how to learn and how to love the process. I was always amazed by how much you knew.
How you were our personal tour guide in Italy and how much fun we had!
You telling me how when you were first talking as a small child but no one knew what you were saying and how frustrated you became from it as a toddler.
You hanging out with Raymond as a preteen when the Pirraglias came over.
The "enemas"/"animals" confusion with the 2 guys from the middle east when you Frank and I were driving... Oh God that was funny!!! Frank and I still laugh about it.
Your tender heart and good nature mixed with your boyish devil may care attitude. The gleam in your eyes with your wonderful smile.
Your bad boy days with Frank and picking you two up in the morning. Your wired jaw and you being sick to death of milkshakes!
Your love of Italian food.
Your David Bowie faze.
The way you cared for Elyse The friend and husband you were to Sigrid.
How you loved my mother.
How you loved my Children
How you cared so much for Jacob as a surrogate father until you dad told you to back off. How you regretted backing off.
How you always saw the good in him...
Funny timing Joe Dennis just called... we had fun the 3 of us, how close we all were growing up especially once your family moved permanently to Bayville.
Our lives were so intermeshed that we were like fraternal twins.
I felt so very loved by you Stephen and miss you so very much...
I am very proud of what you accomplished in your life time as short as it was.
Looking back at photos of all of us together in Delmarva in the photo of you that I took I noticed clues that you were sick then but who expected or knew that you and Elyse would get sick and pass away so very quickly.
Miss and Love you always.

I was so saddened to come across the obituary for Stephen. I was hoping against hope that it was not the Stephen I knew. Then I saw an old photo and read where he was from and my heart sank. I knew Stephen a long time ago, in another lifetime, it seems. I remember looking at him once, in his youth, and thinking, what a beautiful man. He had a light, an aura, that seemed to eminate from him. I am so impressed in reading of his many accomplishments and to see how that light continued to shine in so many aspects of his life. From the photos here, it is evident that he lived a happy and fulfilled life, that he loved greatly and was very loved in return. I am so, so sorry that his life was cut short, but it seems that it was fuller than many whose years stretched out far longer, but were full of empty spaces and "maybe tomorrows." I am happy that his life was the consummation of all his dreams and intelligence and kindness and curiosity. Few can say that. I am sure he is continuing the adventure. My heartfelt condolences go out to Stephen's beautiful and loving family.

News of Stephen's death was such a shock. He grew up upstairs from me in Beech Hills,NY. His mother Grace, who was such a dear, gentle woman, babysat for me and my brother Joey. Also, Grace and Guy used to come downstairs some evenings to share a drink with my parents, marion and eli. Elyse was my earliest friend, who used to follow me around with her big brown eyes. The Mirabellas were such an important part of my childhood, teen years, it is hard to believe they are all gone, even Elyse and Stephen, now. I wish I would have reconnected with them over the years. The last time I remember Stephen, I was listening to him play guitar over my head -- since his room was just above mine! Another memory--his father, Guy, was the very first person to explain to me that the earth was a planet and that we were spinning in space (I was about 8 or nine). His mom, Grace, used to cook great pasta dishes and would bring down a giant casserole for my dad to enjoy when he got home from work -- I would get home from school and the hallway smelled divine on her special dinner days. I'd glance up the stairs of the tiny hallway we shared and hope she would remember to send down Elyse or Stephen with that casserole! He was a lovely boy and I am so pleased to hear how well he did in life and how many people grew to love him. Sigrid, I would love to hear from you, and hear more about "Little Stephen" and maybe share more of my memories of growing up sharing a ceiling/floor with the Mirabellas. Love and sympathy, Risa

I really appreciate having been part of the beautiful rememberance of Mr. Mirabella at St. Anne's last Saturday.
It was wonderful to hear what collegues, students, family, and friends (all were friends) had to say about him and was also wonderful to see the myriad of pictures that were dug out of dusty closets and put on display for all of us to the sound of some of his favorite music.
He was an amazing guy and it was wonderful to see the similar impact that he had on so many of us and to hear the memories that so many had of him. He was so well loved (deservingly) and it was wonderful for me to be part of the celebration. I feel like I know all of you at least a little bit, even if I do not even know your names, because I shared Mr. Mirabella and memories of him with you all.
Thanks so much to the St. Anne's community and to Sigrid.
Much love to you all,
Fondly,
Suzanne

(I wrote a tribute at the local funeral home’s site as soon as I heard, but did not know of this site until the beautiful memorial service at St. Anne's.)
Mr. Mirabella’s death has hit me pretty hard because I love him so much. I have never experienced the same type of up and down emotions and alternately deadpan and profound sadness as I have at varying times in the last few days. However, today I am finally together enough to write this.
Mr. Mirabella was more than a teacher to me as he was to so many others: he was a friend. Teacher, friend, uncle?, mentor--I realized at the service how many people he had touched in the same way. Mr. Mirabella was incredible to talk to and think with. He was very warm, showed his feelings beautifully, and always used his big heart to support others; he was also funny and creative and simply wonderful to be around. Add all this to his incredible talents in the art, music, and literature worlds as well as in the classroom and it is clear what an incredible person he was.
I remember that the first thing that struck me when I considered his classes was how he always respected our ideas as credible and equivalent in value to his own. Sadly, this was an unusual classroom experience, and I felt that a teacher who treated his students as peers he could discuss ideas with as opposed to youngsters he needed to mold was something special. As time went on, I got to know him as a friend as well as a teacher.
For the last couple years we have been apart in our own separate worlds, and I didn't realize how much I would miss Mr. Mirabella until I could never talk to or visit him again.
I always told everyone I got to know about Mr. Mirabella and how incredible he and his classes were. Now I realize that, beyond that, he was one of my favorite people and that I love him more deeply than I thought possible.
I hope he knew how much he meant to me and so many others. He touched me in innumerable ways.
The John and Yoko bedin "Think Different[ly]" (he couldn't help correcting Apple's grammar) poster has always been one of my most prized possessions, not only because it was my first Beatles poster, but also because Mr. Mirabella signed it. I now know that if John himself had signed it, the poster couldn't have meant as much to me as it does with Steve’s signature. (And that is really saying something coming from an insane Beatlemaniac like me). Now that poster and the Federation Credits I have will serve as concrete reminders of the incredible teacher and person Mr. Mirabella was; the wonderful times we had together; and the smile, laugh, and gentle but passionate voice I knew so well and loved so much.
Love always from,
Suzanne

Sigrid and family,
As you know, we were late hearing about Steve's passing. What a shock it was and what sadness it brought to our family.
Steve was such a special person. He was that "once in a lifetime" teacher and we are so happy we were able to know him for the time we did.
It meant so much to us to share the celebration of his life with you at St. Anne's Belfield yesterday and to hear all the wonderful things that were said by his colleagues, students, friends and family.
You know what a profound effect he had on Suzanne. As her mentor, he played a significant role in leading her to where she is today. Even more, he was a true friend to her.
We will miss him, but his memory will not be lost in our family.
My love to all of you,
Debbie

Steve Mirabella
My cousin, my brother, my friend.
Brilliant in multiple ways
As an artist
As a musician
As a teacher
When I look up the word cool in the dictionary, Steve's picture should be there
We did not know each other as kids although we were cousins. We met when my Grandmother passed away around 1987. About 2 years later, I moved to Bayville NY from Florida and stayed with Marietta and Gus in the downstairs of their home. Steve lived next door and was there the day I unpacked my bags. Steve was like an instant best friend, welcoming me to the fold as family. We spent a lot of time together on the North Shore, around Long Island, and all over Manhattan. The days of Steve's blues band were a golden time. There were gigs all over Long Island and Manhattan.
He was like an older brother, a mentor, a collaborator, a confidant. I miss him every day.
Some day we will raise our scotch glasses again and make our special toast "here's to the sons of Iggys".
Not on this earth, but I know he's near by.
I miss you Steve.

Steve did just amazing things for our son at St. Anne's-Belfield School. But it wasn't just his knowledge and skill at teaching that was so effective--it was his deep, warm compassion and contagious exuberance. We are so saddened by his death, and so grateful for his life.

During Steve’s battle with cancer, he gave a chapel at our school. Without a doubt, it was the most moving chapel I have ever heard. He talked about forgiveness, living life exuberantly, the power of prayer, and God’s love. I learned so many lessons from Steve that day and his words still echo in my mind. Sigrid, please be comforted by the knowledge that your beloved husband lives on this earth today, and always, in the hearts of so many.

Steve will continue to live in my heart and in every song I sing. Both he and Sigrid were very instrumental in encouraging me to find that inner voice and share it in song. Together they were a model of love. I learned so mcuh about what a beautiful relationship looks like just by being in their presence. Steve was a mentor to my daughter at James River Day School and an inspiring colleague to me. Above all, he was a great man and I'll miss him dearly.

My son started St. Annes Belfield school last Jan. in the middle of the year. Mr. M. was his favorite teacher. Infact, My son felt that Mr. M. was so inspiring and made class so interesting that Daniel came home from his 1st visit at S.T.A.B. and said "Now I know what's so great about this private school- they get teachers like Mr. M. to work for them and kids love to go to class!" I will be eternally grateful to Mr. M. for making the decision to go to S.T.A.B. so easy for Daniel. We only spoke a few times but he made me feel so good about my son and that he was so happy to have him in his class and as an addition to the S.T.A.B. family. Thank you Mr. M. you will always be remembered as the teacher that lit the way.

I met Steve and Sigrid when they started attending our church, Hinton Ave UMC. I will always remember Steve's smile and his quiet demeanor. I wished we would have had more time to 'really' get to know each other. Like I told Sigrid today, I knew there was a lot more to that beautiful smile (after our Pastor read an article published in a Lynchburg newspaper). I knew he was a teacher at St. Anne's but didn't realize how many young lives he touched until reading all the memorials written. Steve rest in peace. Sigrid, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Remember, one day you will be with your Steve again.

I think my first memory of Steve was that I thought he looked like a rock star. Then, as I got to know him I wished my stepfather was more like him, because he treated everyone like they were equally special to him, which many fathers and stepfathers cannot say. He was definitely a cool guy, and one of the best artists I have ever seen. I knew him before he was sick, and I am so sorry to hear of his struggle. My heart goes out to Sigrid and his family.

It's hard to know where to begin...Mr. Mirabella taught me in 7th and 8th grade at James River (10 or so years ago) and I have so many fond memories of him. He even insisted on writing recommendations for me as I was applying to colleges years later. Last summer I was thrilled to see him, with his wife, at the Nelson County Summer Festival...and was so looking forward to seeing them at this year's festival (sadly, next weekend). And I know that by this point it has been said countless times, but he will be sorely missed.

Dear Sigrid,
I heard about Steve's passing on through Peggy Hayes via email. Just a couple of weeks ago I was thinking about TRUEBLUE and how all of you guys might be doing. I don't remember if it was June 3rd, but maybe Steve flew by me to say goodbye? He was always a funny and comforting friend and goodnatured and creative band member. I miss him a lot and send you and your daughter my heartfeld condolences. Please feel free to contact Laura and me anytime.
Love and happy memories with grooving greetings
