I have many fond memories of Uncle Leo. The phone collection, knife collection, swimming in the pool during the summer, and of course trying to teach me about business. There are so many childhood memories of my Uncle Leo and the visits back and forth between New York and Missouri. For Linnea, who shared some of those same memories with me, I share the following: Santa sleigh bells on the roof. Chinese Food. Oysters on the half shell (no matter how he tried to fix them, I just couldn't get past the fact that they looked like slugs). Bag Pipes at a wedding. Family Reunions with the Drake Clan. Fourth of July Celebrations in our back yard. Catching fireflys. Hair Pieces (the good, the bad, and the ugly). Generosity Creativity Intelligence Determination Love of Country Uncle Leo was one of the most energetic and passionate people I have ever known and he brought that energy and passion to everything he believed in. I will miss him and those childhood years that passed all too quickly. With love and sympathy for our family in New York. John, Damaris & Christopher.

Murray and Jeanie Drake posted a condolence

We had to light another candle for Leo to include one of his favorite poems, "The Sleeper;" one which he had engraved on the monument he erected in the memory of his Great-Great-Great Grandfather, Benjamin Drake, who immigrated to this country in the mid 1700's from the Isle of Jersey, England. Benjamin was a Revolutionary War Patriot and is buried on a hill in the Drake's Cliff Cemetery in East Tennessee on the land that he owned overlooking the Watagua River. Leo spent much of his time and money in restoring the cemetery and erecting the monument. This was very special to him. We want to dedicate this poem to our good friend and cousin, Leo. Murray and Jeanie Drake THE SLEEPER ABOVE the cloistral valley, Above the druid rill, There lies a heavy sleeper Upon a lonely hill. All the long days of summer The low winds whisper by, And the soft voices of the leaves Make murmurous reply. All the long eves of autumn The loving shadows mass Round this sequestered slumbering-place Beneath the cool hill grass. All the long nights of winter The white drifts heap and heap To form a fleecy coverlet Above the dreamer's sleep. All the long morns of springtime The tear-drops of the dew Gleam in the violets' tender eyes As if the blossoms knew. Ah, who would break the rapture Brooding and sweet and still, The great peace of the sleeper Upon the lonely hill!

FOR A GREAT WORLD WAR II PATRIOT! A SAILOR’S PRAYER by Bob Harrison Oh, Lord, I’m sick and tired and old and my strength is going too, But ere I leave this earthly shell, I’d like one thing from You. You know I sailed the seven seas for thirty years or so, And I’d like to make one more patrol before I have to go. I’d like to walk the main deck of a Navy fightin’ ship, And feel the salt spray on me as the bow begins to dip Beneath the wave of stormy seas, oh, Lord, You caused to be A peril to seafaring men who go down in ships to sea. Lord, I want to hear the throb of diesels one more time And take my turn at standin’ watch and cleanin’ out the slime From the bilges, as a punishment for failin’ to obey The Captain’s standin’ orders that were posted for the day. And, Lord, I’d like to hear the bosun’s whistle once again As he calls the crew to breakfast, or in the evening when It’s time for evening movies and the starboard watch is set And the port side knows by heart the movie that they’ll get! I’d like to stand on topside and watch the moon upon the sea, And wonder at the beauty, and how all things came to be, The morning comes, the sun breaks through, another awesome sight, To see the shimmer on the waves, like Your Eternal Light. So when my cruise is over and I soar to heights unknown, And I kneel before You, Lord, as You sit on Judgement’s Throne, As You contemplate some small reward that you think applies to me, Just assign me to Your fastest ship on Your Eternal Sea. Linnea, Randall and Dana, It is difficult to express our feelings for Leo. Even though we haven't known him that long, Leo was so special to us. His charisma and love of life, his wonderful sense of humor, his love of Tyyra and the three of you and his grandchildren, his intelligence and imagination, his independence and loyalty to his country and so, so much more. We have never known a man like Leo. Such spirit, determination, care and kindness all wrapped up in one man. You should all be so proud to have had a father and grandfather like him. We became connected to Leo in 2006 through our mutual interest in our Drake genealogy. We feel honored to have known Leo as a friend and relative. We are so very sorry for your loss. Linnea, My heart goes out to you and your family in the loss of your parents... my sincere condolences. I know it hurts, but please know that although a precious and dear part of your life has been taken away... THEIR life, love & light will live on forever in your heart and through your own life and the life of your own child. YOU are their product of love... what amazing love! Please find comfort in knowing that you WILL see them again one day... they have gone to join that "great cloud of witnesses..." (cheering us on, as spoken of in Hebrews 12). Sadly, I never met you Leo, but I have the honor of knowing your wonderful daughter, Linnea, and grand-daughter, Amberlee. Obviously, in order to produce such a loving and exceptional daughter, who in return has a great daughter of her own, you yourself must have been magnificent. Enjoy heaven!
