Bill Bartscher was my beloved uncle and always a special presence in my life. He bought me my first and only tennis racket and taught me to ski. He was incredibly warm and hospitable: he and Aunt Joan always had an open door and a full table for family and many, many others. Uncle Bill worked hard and he played hard. He made a positive difference in so many ways, making his world shine and smile. (Lots of smiles, lots of laughter.) My husband, Bob, also loved Bill's company and we're both sorry that moving to Utah has made traveling difficult. Very importantly, Uncle Bill suffered for his country as a prisoner-of-war in World War II. He was awarded a Silver Star and I thank him, humbly, for his bravery and sacrifice. The four of us--Bill, Joan, Bob, and myself--spent time together in Oyster Bay during the tragedy of September 11, 2001. There are so many memories, and so much love. I'll always miss my dear Uncle Bill, but with a smile and a heart full of gratitude. (I expect to see him again.)

I will always remeber the "brrread" man (you must roll the R's to say it like he did). He let me call him Grandpa and he was the only grandpa I knew. He treated Gen and I like we were really his grand daughters and I will love him for it forever.

When I think of Uncle Bill, I always think of happy times. He could always make me laugh, like when he would say with mock seriousness "Billy, it's too bad you said that, I was just starting to like you again!" Or when he would play Raymond at the piano and finish with a glissando and a slide off the bench. He was generous to a fault and tempered his lighter side with sage advice when it was needed. I will miss you Uncle Bill!

I will always remember Uncle Bill's love for us kids. He always made us feel important and always made time to entertain or play with us. I remember the excitement all us kids had when we learned Aunt Joan and Uncle Bill had arrived. He inspired us to learn as we played and was always an extremely positive roll model. As I grew up, I admired Uncle Bill even more for his service to our country. I enjoyed hearing his stories of WWII and would ask about his experience as a POW. Even in those memories, he could find the positive when many could only think of that as being all negative. Uncle Bill, the memories you've given us will always be remembered. Your friendly smile, caring voice, positive attitude, and youthfulness are engrained in our hearts and memories. You will always be loved and missed.

Bill was a gentle, funny man and a delight to be around. His son is my brother-in-law and some of my favorite memories are of their joke trading, each one funnier than the last. Bill and Joan welcomed me into their family and their home......thanks for the memories, love and kindness. With love.....KB

I lost my grandfathers at a young age, so when I first met Bill I was so happy to have a grandpa again. He and Joan welcomed me into their family as one of their own, and I will never forget it. Grandpop had a quick wit, and always made me laugh. And though we know he loved to tell jokes, he was also a good listener, engaging and worldly. My life is richer for knowing him, and I'm glad that his great-granddaughter was able to know him, if even for a short time. Rest in peace, Grandpop.

My grandfather was a sweet man with a kind heart and a great sense of humor. He gave me many pointers in life such as never walking downstairs with your hands in your pockets and never putting your head in a bag with a cat. He taught me and my brother how to taste wine properly at a young age which always got a lot of respect! We will miss you, oh Great One! Love, Christie

I carry many memories of Uncle Bill. There was always much excitement when we were at Grandpa and Grandma's in Catskill, knowing Uncle Bill and Aunt Joan would be visiting. He would get down on our level and entertain us. Whether making music on crystal glasses or patiently instructing us in tennis, I always felt I was the most important person to him. Nothing else mattered but me.
I last saw Uncle Bill 3 years ago. At the time he gave my husband a set of his golf clubs. It was because of that that our son Larsen developed a interest in the sport. And since then he has grown to love golf, taking lessons and attending camps. Though Larsen was young and will not have the memories I have of Uncle Bill, Uncle Bill gave Larsen something of himself and birthed a love for a sport in this little boys heart. I am so grateful.
I will miss him so much.

Bill taught me how to play tennis, opened his home to me, was my Dad after my Dad died. He was grandpa to my girls. He is special. One of a kind, the best of men.

I remember Great Uncle Bill as a jovial spirit, always with a smile and a joke at the tip of his tongue. I cherish the time we spent together in Oyster Bay while visiting as a child.
