Obituary of Carmen J. Melillo

Melillo, Carmen J. - on Nov. 11, 2010, age 84, Lifelong resident of Oyster Bay, NY. Beloved husband of the late Celia. Loving father of George Melillo(Rose), and Carmen Jean Melillo. Cherished grandfather of Nicholas James, and Joseph Allan. Also survived by loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was the oldest living member of the Italian Mutual Aid Society of Oyster Bay, Founder of Oyster Bay Clam Bar, Past Commander of American Legion Quentin Roosevelt Post # 4, and a devoted WWII Veteran and Purple Heart Recipient. Visiting at Oyster Bay Funeral Home, 261 South St., Oyster Bay, NY, Saturday 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at the Oyster Bay Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday at 10:00 a.m., Rev. Kevin Smith, Pastor of St. Dominic RC Church officiating. Interment at Locust Valley Cemetery. A Remarkable Friendship and Train Ride Memory My wife "Q" and I, and our family, have been fairly stationary people in this fast paced American life, of six plus decades, having had only two permanent residences of ten or twenty years or more of tenure in our adult lives. Carmen J. Melillo is the second longest neighborly resident friendship we have had in all the years and ventures this life journey has given us. Along with his other good, outstanding and outspoken qualities Carmen was a trusted and loyal friend and a great neighbor. We fought some good and hard battles together, and win or lose, serious or humorous, we found them all to be fun in the end and we could always laugh at our own mistakes… few that they were of course… Carmen and I were religious, political and social friends, neighbors, conversation partners and colleagues. He was a great sounding board for my ideas as a writer… whether wildly or seriously founded. He was a great "Purple Heart" honored American, a Patriot and a big brother like personal supporter who helped me start a movement to get my personal friend of nearly half a century nominated and elected as our nation's next and 45th President. Carmen always enjoyed my humorous approach to things and even my summary of the Christian Bible, the Muslim Quran, the Jewish Torah, all the other sayings of wisdom from all the "good books" of human history, plus the civil laws of society and governance… and he lived his life by that most important teaching and rule of God… what I have summed up into a one sentence Godly piece, nicknamed by the acronym "Duo ay wht duy" (pronounced "Duo hey what dewey")… also known as The Golden Rule of Human Life and Peaceful Coexistence: "Duo ay wht duy"… "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." It is a remarkable five minutes or so of very impacting video I feel is apropos at this time for young and old as it says a lot in words, pictures and musical accompaniment. I have always enjoyed and often shared this with family and friends to explain the human relationship aspect of this train ride journey of the God given miracle of life. Please enjoy it now even if you have seen it before, enjoy it once again in Carmen's honor and memory as our friend, your Dad and Granddad departs this train ride journey for the last time. I only hope I can be as lucky to live as long, be as active and enjoy as much of all aspects of this human life and this train ride journey, and the many friendships now with us and yet to be made, as this good friend did in his eighty five year trip. Will miss you Carmen and God speed your safe and continuing eternal journey.
