We extend our heartfelt condolences to Kathleen and the entire family.
Norm was a long time member of the NY Water Environment Association, and joined in 1958 and remained an active member until 2012. He was a Life Member in the Water Environment Federation and in addition to his engineering degrees, he was a pioneer and one of NY State’s early licensed 4A operators. Among his many awards, he was a member of the Quarter Century Operator’s Club; he was inducted into the NYWEA Hall of Fame in 2010; he received the Arthur Sidney Bedell Award in 1993. In 1988, he received the Ernest R. Carroll Safety Award and the John Chester Brigham Award. In 1967 he received the Kenneth Allen Memorial Award.
Norm had many NYWEA close friends including Joe Massaro who helped Norm keep his operator license renewal active right up until the time he went into a nursing home! Norm was active on NYWEA’s Safety committee and was NYWEA’s first unofficial development director and raised thousands of dollars for NYWEA in his position as chair of the Sponsor and Exhibit committee. Norm had a generous spirit and each year contributed to NYWEA’s Scholarship Fund. His passion for NYWEA ran deep, as he also chaired NYWEA’s Membership committee during a time the organization saw great growth.
Norm was a member of the Select Society of Sanitary Sludge Shovelers and an active member of the Metropolitan and Long Island Chapters. He was also a great writer and wrote for Clear Waters magazine. Maggie and I went to see Norm at his home in Locust Valley in 2014, we had a special visit on a nice day and were able to meet Kathleen and sit outside and talk with Norm. He held a very special place in the hearts of the NYWEA members and friends who knew him.
Patricia Cerro-Reehil, Executive Director, NY Water Environment Association
