Obituary of Norman R. Melbinger

Please share a memory of Norman to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

MELBINGER—Norman R. Melbinger, passed away March 19, 2022 at the age of 86 after a long battle with dementia. Norman is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Kreszenzia (Deininger). He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Kathleen; children Marianne (Donna), Elizabeth, Stephen (Linda), Christine (Timothy); Suzanne (Anthony); grandchildren, Ryan, Emma, Nicholas, Ethan, Caroline, Sean and William. Norman was born and raised in Manhattan. His family then moved to the Bronx. Norman attended Manhattan College earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Adding to this accomplishment he went on to earn a Masters of Civil Engineering from New York University. He married the love of his life Kathleen in 1960 after meeting in the Bronx. Their growing family of five spanned the Bronx and then to their forever home in Locust Valley, New York. Norman’s professional career highlight was joining the Department of Environmental Protection where he spent 33 years. He added a Professional Engineering license to his accolades. Never one to rest on his laurels, upon retiring, he began a private engineering practice consulting on Long Island. Many know Norman’s involvement as a member of the IAABO certifying him as a high school and college basketball official. His children kept him busy as did his love of hunting, fishing and tennis. These activities were shared with his close friends and family including his fellow members of the Mill River Rod and Gun Club where he belonged for 25 years. In 2001, Norman being the ultimate do-it-yourself kind of guy, passionately built a dream retreat in Deposit, New York; a rustic log cabin where he continued to enjoy his love of the outdoors and hobbies. Family filled his final years, always surrounded by love. Affectionately dubbed Stormin’ Norman by many who knew, loved and appreciated him; his memory will live on in his community and in the hearts of his children and grandchildren. Visiting Oyster Bay Funeral Home, 261 South St. Oyster Bay, NY, Thursday, March 31, 2022 from 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass St. Dominic RC Chapel, Oyster Bay, NY on Friday, April 1, 2022 at 9:45 a.m. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery.
