Obituary of Dawson S. Hunter
Dawson Smith Hunter Jr., 94, of Black Mountain North Carolina (formerly of Westbury, NY), passed away peacefully on Sunday December 10th, 2023. He was born on March 9th, 1929 to Dawson and Martha Hunter in Patchogue, NY.
Dawson graduated from Hofstra College after volunteering to serve in the US Army Paratroopers as a radio communication operator. His professional career focused on science and engineering at Grumman Corporation where he helped build the Lunar Excursion Module that would carry the first human to the moon. His love for being part of something bigger than himself led to volunteering as a Cub Scout Master, starting Boy Scout Troop 507, and eventually establishing Outdoor Adventure Explorer Post One. For over 18 years, his leadership in the Post impacted thousands of young people with a love of the outdoors including swimming, hiking, canoeing, and rock climbing as well as expeditions to the Grand Canyon, Mount Rainier, and Mount McKinley.
Dawson's love for the outdoors and zest for life were reflected in his active pursuits, from surfing and running to working in his workshop and gardening. He remained engaged and spirited into his nineties.
He is survived by his loving wife Barbara and two children Suzanne White (James) and Kevin Hunter (Lisa). He is also survived by his grandchildren Sarah Hardenbergh (Alexander), Colin White, Max Hunter, and Matthew Hunter. Dawson was predeceased by his children Gary, Neal, and Mark Hunter.
A memorial service will be held on Friday December 15th, 2023 from 4:00 to 7:30 PM at Oyster Bay Funeral Home, 261 South St., Oyster Bay, NY. Interment will be at Pinelawn Memorial Park on Saturday December 16th.
