Annette,
Regarde, Annette, je ne pleure pas,
Lorsque je me souviens de toi.
Là où tu es… plus de peine
Tu as retrouvé Tonton, Doc, Augustine, Joseph et Madeleine
Tu nous attends, bien sûr, tu as préparé le chemin,
Oui nous nous reverrons, dans quelques temps, peut-être demain.
Alors je te confie à Dieu,
Notre Père qui est aux cieux.
Amen (Claude)

Claudine was so lucky to have her as a mom. I remember in college, when my sister and I were visiting Claudine and her family, and Claudine's mom was so kind and hospitable to us. I have a distinct memory of sitting in their kitchen the night we arrived and her outlining what our plan was for the visit, and making sure we were comfortable, and had a good route to run for our cross-country training practice we needed to do that weekend. We were all tired, it was a Friday night and they'd picked us up at the train station, taken us out for dinner, and driven us home, and even though she was tired, and we were all tired, she talked to my sister and I in such a thoughtful, caring way. She was also always knitting something for Claudine and at college whenever we would sit down for dinner in the dining hall, it seems like at least once a week, though it was probably more like one a month, we would be noticing something beautiful that Claudine's mom knit for her.

I wanted to share this on Mother’s Day. Claudine had a wonderful mother, Annette was a wonderful human being who was kind even to those she didn’t know. When my daughter was born, we already moved back to Europe and she shared her time and love by making her a blanket. A present that is both beautiful and caring, that we preserve till today, together with our love and beautiful memories for Claudine and NYC. When I traveled with Claudine, she gave us wise suggestions as she knew the true beauty and true values around the World, and she wanted Claudine to have those. And while I believe that the love a mother feels for her child is such a strong force that it can never disappear from the world, She will be thoroughly missed.

Annie was a major part of my life growing up and I have many cherished memories of her, I remember waiting with anticipation at what gift Annie would bring me back from her world travels and was never disappointed. She was never one to just grab something in the airport and she seemed to always know what I'd like. I will never forget her returning from Mexico and bringing me a full size leather bullwhip. I spent many hours in the backyard attempting to perfect the whip snapping of a 15 foot long bullwhip and this was many years before Indiana Jones.
I considered Annie to be my person Guidance Counselor and she helped me make many difficult decisions and was on numerous occasions the voice of reason when I needed someone to talk to. I will miss her greatly.

how can you explain the relationship Annette, Pat and I had raising our children together. Always welcoming, supporting, loving. What a wonderful friendship; certainly neighbors is just geographical. we had a bond that withered as our kids grew and left for their independent lives, but the fond memories and attachment never waned. Annette was a dear dear friend.

Annette, quiet strength and beauty. My "other" sister I looked up to and admired. I just wish I told you so. Direct yet kind and gentle. It was hard to see you suffer your last year but you are at rest now with God and loved ones. You will be missed and always loved.

Annette was a college classmate of my wife so I knew her since 1962. As a result of her friendship, Annette served as a bridesmaid at our wedding. My friendship with Annette and Steve continued after the death of my wife. Annette was one of the nicest and kindest fiend that Maureen and I had. May Annette have eternal rest with the Lord and may her soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Jay Delany

I have so many memories of Mrs. Bitel, (I still have a hard time calling her Annette). Some are subtle flashing moments...sitting at the table at East Norwich and having dinner with the family. Driving to Woodstock with Claudine, playing Uno in the backseat. Trying escargot for the first time in Woodstock, with Claudine, Steve, Annette and of course Muguet. Picking Claudine and I up after school. Mistakenly driving over a parking median on our way back from Woodstock and two men lifting up the car while Claudine and I were still in it! And graciously attending a Mary Kay party hosted by my mother (in the colorful 1980's), and although lovely, she left the event looking as if she could have been an extra for Ringling Brothers. Then, there are memories that even further show the strength of her heart and character. When she found out I wanted to go to art school (even though I was in Atlanta), she sent me all the applications for the best schools in NYC (where I wanted to move back to). I attended many after school and summer art programs because of the research and tenacity of Annette. When I moved back to NY, I stayed with Claudine for six weeks, and when I found a place to live, Annette drove me around the city setting up my apartment in one day. I would not be the artist and person I am today without Annette. One of the most generous, determined people I have ever met, Annette helped shape my life with her love, resolve and independence. I am forever grateful to have known her this lifetime and am certain she is joyfully at peace with all of her human and animal loved ones.

When we moved into our new house in 1978, I had no idea how lucky we would be to live across the street from Annette, Steve, and Claudine. Annette and I shared countless cups of tea and chatted about our girls, politics, our teaching careers, and anything else that popped into our heads. She was so smart and insightful that I still value some of the things she shared.
She struggled so bravely with Steve by her side, caring for her in the most patient and loving way. Like all of us who love her, I miss her.

Annette always reminded me of my mom. She was always nice, gentle, and someone who nobody can forget. I will always remember her and uncle Stephen’s gourmet thanksgivings. They would make a ton of food of every kind you can think of. But, I would always just eat turkey and mashed potatoes because that’s all I liked as a young kid. I was lucky enough to have known her in my life. I will definitely miss her!
Love,
Chrissy and Family

I worked with Annette at both Berner and Massapequa high schools in Massapequa for many years. She was a very gentle, honest and sincere person who did a great job for those students assigned to her as their guidance counselor. Annette always had her students best interest at heart and represented and advised them with great care, very lovingly and professionally. I was always impressed by her energy, spirit and deternination . because her quiet, meek disposition and mannerisms might lead one to conclude otherwise.

Annette was one of my best friends for over 55 years. She and Steve introduced Don and me to each other in 1973 at their Christmas party. Before Don and I married, Annette and I spent many Friday nights together cooking up a gourmet meal, and Saturdays in the Village shopping. Annette was my Matron of Honor and Steve was Don's Best Man. We were part of the LaTour-Bitel family always invited to Thanksgiving where I would carve the turkey and Don would mash the potatoes, and Annette would cook a sumptuous, gourmet meal. Christmas parties and BBQs in East Norwich, and New Years Brunch at our house, we always shared a deep friendship and a lasting love. Annette, you were a wonderful caring friend, confident, and "big sister" to me. You are deeply missed. Flora M. Hartford

Annette was a wonderful, caring sister-in-law.
She would let me invite my friends who had no place to go on Thanksgivings to her luxurious dinners that would take up to three weeks to prepare.
She was kind and thoughtful and had a good since of humor.
She kept you grounded too.
I'll miss you Annette.
