Dearest Bette, You were the cool, popular kid in school that I always tried to copy. Thank you for making mud pies with me, getting me off of fence tops when I got stuck, sharing a locker with me, making me laugh, and always caring about me. I will always miss you.

Oh my, Betty and I were short gals in O.B. We often made jokes about ourselves. Hmmm, back n the day @ Glen Cove Rd, we could chill over her house. She really was a kind sistah! I will miss her smile, sincere wit, organizing leadership, and The Fourth of July. To Tia, and the Family, my heart pours out with deepest sorrow. Though I was not able to be with you I share your lost and I am with you in spirit. I hope that you find comfort in knowing that God is always there. Just call on him. His grace will bring peace to heal your hearts. Love always, Beverly Evans

Dear Bette,
There are so many wonderful things I could and will say about you. The most important one of all is, I will miss you as much as I miss my mother (she will be waiting for you at the gates of heaven). One of the things I never told you, I loved the way you took care of your big sister/my mother. One of my fondest memories was whenever we (the Brooks family) returned from Europe, the plane would land and at the bottom of the ramp would be the James sisters. While my mother and her sister got reacquainted, I would look through the crowd of faces to see your smiling face. At that moment I always know that I was home.
The one thing nobody will ever be able to take away from you is “You were and are the Champion for the young ones. You made sure the Easter egg hunts happened, every kid received cards and gifts for their birthdays, and there were always plenty of Christmas gifts for all the kids. You did that when I was a kid and you were still doing it now for my son. You will be MISSED!!
Tia, Joseph, MaryAnn, Javonte, Lil Joe, Jennifer, Duke, Jamel, and Jasha things may never be the same but they will get better, I PROMISE. If there is anything that we can do you know where to find us!!
Love, LaMonte, Laura, and Jason.

For our own selfish reasons we are saddened by our loss, some of us more than others. Please do not be mad at God for calling his child home. For his devine reasons that we will never understand, he has called Betty home. Knowing the kind of wonderful person she is, than you can rejoice in the fact that there must have been a tremendous task that our Heavinly Father knew that she, and only she could fill in the Heavenly Kingdom. I am very sorry for the loss of (Jimmy's MOM) She will truly be missed. Remember God created Betty, in his image of what she was, A Loving, Caring, Kind, Gentile, Beautiful person, yes he broke the mold when he made her. I am very glad to have known her, if the rest of the world were 1/10 as special as Betty, then the world would truly be peaceful and happy place. Whatever task God has called Betty home for He knows as well as we all know that Betty is way way over qualified. Once again I'm truly sorry to the whole family. Dear Bette,
I am so sad to see you leave us. When I first began working at IGA you made me feel so confortable and we became fast friends. Your honesty, sincerity, integrity, and spirituality made me love you..you were REAL..no pretenses. I will always remember the laughter we shared and the good times we had whether it was going to the theatre, enjoying the football and baseball pools, sharing a novel, or planning a party. whenever I had a problem I knew I could share it with you and it would go no further. I remember how you loved Disney World...Mickey was your favorite (I think). If each of our "heaven" is where we would most like to be, I think you will spend eternity in Disney World with all your loved ones. Thank you, Bette, for being such a good friend. There is a place in my heart for you and I will miss you terribly. God must have decided that your job here on earth was accomplished, but for all of us, it was too soon. Rest in peace, my friend. I've known you for thirty years but it doesn't seem so long ago that Joe & Jen were kids & we were hanging out at Bloomingdale Ave. School.
If being too considerate is a fault, then you were guilty. If being too generous is bad, then you were really good at that too. I will be always grateful to you because you were one of the people most supportive for me when I lost my mom.
I teased you over the years because you were one of my favorites & I sincerely hope you realized that. When I complimented you, I almost always meant it. I sometimes thought you didn't take praise well because you did not want the credit...but you seemed to be in the middle of everything!

Iris posted a condolence
Bette (Liz) – I cannot find words to adequately express the hole in my heart from your loss. I am trying to fill it with the many beautiful memories I have of you. I can picture you coming in to work whether I met you in the parking lot or in the office; you always had that big smile and said, “Hi - I”. That smile would light up the whole room – everyone loves that warm smile. I lovingly remember trips to Manhattan with Jamel and Ashley, Theater club trips, Church bake sales, family birthdays, weddings, lunches together, the ritual of taking the morning “pill” – (pill in one hand, glass of water in the other, “Don’t look at me!”) There are so many memories I will cherish forever.
You are such an exceptional person who has touched so many lives in so many ways. I have always admired you. You have always had the natural ability to meet people for the first time and make them feel as if they were one of your life long friends. You make everyone feel “warm and fuzzy” – as many people have said to me in the past few weeks “Everyone loves Bette!” You always championed the “underdog” and stood your ground when someone was being treated unfairly. It was a very natural progression for you to extend the charitable work that you have done for your Church to other organizations. You were always planning something!
Having been raised Catholic; I have always loved and had faith in God. When you told me you were sick, I kept asking God “Why? - this is not fair”. I know your deep abiding love for and faith in God and I can hear you telling me to “Put it in God’s hands”. You always found a way to lift my spirits and knew exactly what to say to bring comfort to someone.
The Bible instructs us to give to those in need; you did that every day of your life. You gave with your kind words, wonderful deeds, and with that vibrant smile. You really are an embodiment of the woman Chaka sings about – “Every Woman” - kind, helpful, caring, giving, loving, nurturing, and supportive.
You and I have shared thoughts about many different subjects from our families to what is going on in the world today. In the process we laughed, cried, we were proud, we were afraid, and we comforted each other. I miss you so much and I will carry you in my heart forever. Your family has lost a truly wonderful person who made an indelible mark on the world.
My love and prayers go out to your entire family, which you have always made me feel a part of. Until we meet again my dear friend.

For years you were in charge of the extras like Sunshine, parties & planning. Nothing was ever too much for you. Your schedule of daily good deeds touched so many at work, the union, the church & the community & so much more. I will think of you & always miss you.

Bette- You were my first friend when I came to work for the town 23 years ago. You were at my wedding to David, in fact you were the one to help me find a churh to have the ceremony in.
Jen was Chris' babysitter when she was in Jr. High. When we were adopting Matt, you were the first one there with gifts to set up his crib whenwe wern't ready and they were bringing him home to us permanently. When we decided to get involved in the union, you were my running mate. Our lives have been intertwined for so many years, I can't go through a day without thinking of you.
The last time I spoke to you, you told me the only thing you needed from me was to keep praying, and you told me you loved me. I never stopped praying, and I will never stop loving you. Tia, Jen, Joe, Jamel, Javonte,Jasha, Joey, Mary Ann,and Duke -you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Be-Boppin, you will be so missed by so many people - you touched so many for long. Love you always- Rose
